Citrus County Cleanup-Greenup

KCCB has a long-standing community cleanup program. Although the program started as a litter pickup effort, beautification projects were soon part of the program. The program, which is patterned after the national program, Keep America Beautiful's Great American Cleanup, which occurs each spring in communities around the country. Citrus County is fortunate to have many months of good weather, allowing this event to operate year-round.

Any community group can organize a cleanup in their neighborhood or in another area of the county. KCCB will provide helpful hints on organizing an event, plus grabbers, bags, gloves and vests for the day of the event. The county will waive tipping fees at the landfill for trash that is generated.

Groups could focus on picking up unwanted bulky items (furniture, tires and/or appliances) in neighborhoods; or work on trimming trees and shrubs and weeding in public spaces. Projects could be to make minor home repairs, do pressure washing, repainting homes, planting of trees, flowers or veggies in a community garden, and of course litter pickup projects. So be creative, have fun and be a part of Citrus County Cleanup-Greenup.

Examples of  Past Cleanup-Greenup Projects...

The Airboat Alliance group of 75 boats joined 1530 volunteers to collect 8400 lbs. of litter from waterways in 2012. (Citrus 2020)

Members of Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church did a spring 2012 project in Crystal River that involved Lyngbya removal from the springs, landscape maintenance at the Seminole club, painting of buildings, and general litter pickup.

The Crystal River Garden Club regularly does landscape maintenance at the cemetery at 3rd and 3rd.

Volunteers from the Friends of Ellie Schiller State Wildlife Park work every week to maintain the beauty of plantings at the park.
